Exercise Rehabilitation
How does exercise complement our hands-on treatment?
Exercise is an incredibly important part of the rehabilitation process and can really accelerate recovery when the patient is an active participant (aka do your homework!). As much as we love our visits with you, the goal is to give you the tools you need to keep moving well so eventually you don’t need us anymore.
Your physiotherapist will build a tailored exercise program that includes both strengthening and mobility work to help correct imbalances and restore your function.
What can I expect in my first rehabilitation session?
During your initial assessment and treatment session we aim to give you a few basic exercises tailored to help address strength or mobility deficits that have resulted in your specific injury. You will also receive guidance around daily activities to continue and others to initially avoid to aid in your recovery.
What type of physio exercises will I get?
We develop a tailored exercise program for you over the course of your treatment plan to address mobility and strength imbalances that may have contributed to your injury. We use a lot of mat based pilates work to strengthen your core and glutes which almost everyone needs that walks through our doors!
What if I don’t have any equipment?
That’s not a problem! We provide resistance bands if you require them for your homework and give many bodyweight exercises that can be done without equipment. We can also get creative in suggesting household items that can be substituted for weights if you don’t have what you need at home.
How fast will I feel the results?
It typically takes 4-6 weeks to start to build muscle when you commit to performing your exercises at least three times per week. The positive effects of mobility work and muscle activation can be felt much sooner. Moral of the story: the more consistent you are with your homework, the quicker you will start to feel the results!
